The First Sydney Modern Quilt Guild for 2012

The Sydney Modern Quilt Guild also had it first meeting of the year on Saturday February the 11th at the cafe "Not Bread Alone" in Artarmon.

The venue was huge! We could have fit 50 people in there without any problems. The was excellent as well as plenty of shops to look at after the meeting was over.

Although only six of us turned up it was a lovely get together and we had lots of food, and a fantastic show and tell and we were very lucky to get to see all the fantastic things that one of the lovely ladies Jen, bought back from the States with her all the way from Joannes. Makes me want to organise a trip to the US just to go to that store! Anyone want to come along?!

We look forward to the next meeting and seeing many more of you with your exciting creations in tow.

Sydney Modern Quilt Guild November Meeting

After the wonderful success of our first meeting we were doubly excited about our second meeting which was held on 27 November at the Blue Gum Hotel in Waitara.

It was fabulous to see some of the wonderful ladies from our last meeting and some new faces for this meeting.

We were located in main part of the pub this time and at times it was a little hard to hear one another but we all had a great time.

It was absolutely wonderful to see almost each and every person doing some sort of hand work - it was really inspiring to see what everyone was up to.

Show and tell went wonderfully and we got a little chat on how to use the folded mirrors to help fussy cut diamonds!

Lunch was fantastic and usual. Unfortunately our name labels kept coming off and one of our lovely ladies decided to put her label somewhere it was unlikely to get knocked off! Maybe making our own name tags might be in order for our next meeting - lets go crazy and see what we can come up with.

Sydney Modern Quilt Guild - Our First Meeting

October 22nd was the very first Sydney Modern Quilt Guild meeting. Our first meeting was held at the fantastic Blue Gum Hotel in Waitara. I sat fantastic as the location was great as was the food.

We were extremely pleased to see about 25 lovely women turn up ready to share projects, talk about quilting and other 'stuff', share a meal and show us what they were up too. It was great to get together with other quilters of all different skills. For some of the lovely ladies there it was the first quilting meeting they had ever been too.

It was a very hot day and we were very lucky to have a function room all to ourselves - we had a lovely breeze blowing in through the windows and there was plenty of drinks to chose from. We introduced ourselves, many ladies bought finished projects and some brought works in progress and will we did the show and tell got to know each other a little better. Some ladies also brought some hand sewing to do while talking. It was so wonderful to see so many talented ladies in one room enjoying themselves.

We are looking forward to many more such meetings in the future.

This week's inspiration comes from Ashley from Film in the fridge. We love the movement of the blocks across the surface of the quilt, and the use of a lot of negative space to assist the design.

This weeks inspiration is from Elizabeth Dackson of Don't Call Me Betsy. We love the use of bright bold solids with a touch of white in each block. Very effective. Luckily for us, if you would like to make this quilt the pattern is available at Moda Bakeshop.

This week's inspiration was suggested by one of our Sydney Modern Quilters (thanks Stephanie!) and is by Kaye over at Miss Print. We love the use of little pieces of feature fabrics, and the way it looks like an improvised piece. We also love the colours, so clean and fresh with that great pop of orange and grey. Even better - Kaye has a tutorial for this project which you can check out!

For this weeks inspiration we are proud to present this wonderful Black Quilt made my Geta who blogs at Geta's Quilting Studio. She is an amazing quilter who lives in Romania. This shows just how far and wide modern quilting has 'caught on'. Head on over to her blog to her other wonderful creations.

We love the use of the solids combinations on a very simple design and then teaming it up with the black background, scrappy binding and very visual quilting! The quilting is really amazing on this quilt and really adds depth and texture to the background.

We couldn't think of a better way to start our series of "Inspirations" than with Alissa, who is one of the founding members of the Modern Quilt Guild. We choose this because of the use of a very current colour combination with the red, aqua and grey, and we also love the improvised piecing of a traditional block!

There are more than 70 chapters of the Modern Quilt Guild around the world, and we think its time that Sydney had a chapter!

What is “Modern Quilting”?

Well, we think that answer is slightly different for everyone. But generally things like this:

· Improvisational piecing

· On trend colours and fabrics

· Involvement in the online quilting community.

· Solids! (Who doesn’t love them?)

· Feet planted in tradition, but taking advantage of the new cleaner, simpler trends, designs, techniques

What are we aiming for here?

We want to create a group in Sydney that offers a way to explore the more non-traditional aspects of your quilt making. (you don't need to be ONLY a modern quilter!)
We want an in person guild, that meets on a regular basis.

We want challenges, swaps, Bees, classes and sit and sews.
We want to include as many people as possible, whether they belong to any other guild, or not.
We want beginners, professionals and everyone in between to be welcome.
We want to have lots of fun and enjoy being part of this florishing community!
